* A single egg is laid around September/October/November
* Incubation time about 44 days
* Chicks stay in the colony until February/March
* The birds then migrate to Australia, returning after 2-6 years
* it is said that (after weeks of furious flapping of wings on land) the first flight of the juvenile birds takes them to their destination more than 2000 km away.

The morepork is a dark brown owl with buff coloured bars on its chest and underparts and large yellow eyes set in a dark facial mask.

Being nocturnal, they feed at night, mainly on large insects like weta, cicadas, moths, huhu beetles, and other night flying insects. They also eat spiders, mice, small rats and small birds. Any indigestible material is dropped from the daytime perch and collects on the forest floor.

The morepork has a variety of calls, calling mainly at night and starting at dusk. The familiar call is a very clear ‘more-pork’ which carries through a still night and can be heard a long way off. They screech a repeated ‘cree’ when hunting.

Breeding is between September and February and the nest can be virtually anywhere. It could be found on the ground, sheltered behind rocks or in a petrel burrow, or high up in the hollow of a tree or branch. Sometimes in epiphytes or in a cabbage tree. The eggs are incubated solely by the female for 20 – 30 days and the young moreporks fledge about 35 days after hatching.

This little baby fell out of its nest and is being looked after by bird rescue, and will be rehabilitated as soon as possible.

The Abandoned Lot II - reworked

To get this image look like this, I started with the original and did a fake HDR by taking one image, and adjusting the exposures 3x to make a -2, 0 and +2 exposure. I then took it into Photomatix and combined them, and used the tonemapping function with a high light smoothing.

You can see the original HDR here..

Took this back into photoshop and converted it to black and white. Added some red poppies from another old image I had and placed them into the black and white image.

I then copied the colour hdr image into the black and white image, lowered the opacity sightly to about 70%, then Adjusted the overlay using colour burn. Desaturated the poppies slightly and here is the finished result.

Yoga on the Beach

This was just a 'shot' of my daughter and my friend doing yoga on the beach last year. I had taken a few shots for panoramas, so when I asked the panorama program to look into that directory to see what could be stitched together, it chose this, stitching two photos together in an overlay, making it look like a double exposure.
