The New Zealand dotterel/tūturiwhatu is an endangered species found only in this country. It was once widespread and common but there are only about 1700 birds left. This serious decline in numbers is due to a combination of habitat loss, predation by introduced mammals and disturbance during breeding.

Canon 7D, 10-22mm Lens Paris.
This was taken by the side of the Notre Dame on the day of the final of the Rugby World Cup between New Zealand and France. After visiting the Cathedral we went on to watch the rugby in a small pub. The woman walking ahead of me in the image is my daughter.

Canon 20D, 75-300mm Lens
Looking through some of my photos, I found this one which I have never used. These birds are like silver bullets and never sit still, extremely hard to photograph, so I'm quite pleased with this one.

I didn't realise that the bird was flying straight at me until the image was on my computer!
